Against All Odds

They ask us why we mutilate each other like we do. And wonder why we hold such little worth for human life. But to ask us why we turn from bad to worse is to ignore from which we came. You see you wouldn't ask why the rose that grew from the concrete had damaged petals. On the contrary, we would all celebrate its tenacity. We would all love its will to reach the sun. Well, we are the roses. This is the concrete. And these are my damaged petals. Don't ask me why. Thank God ... and ask me how?

Wow, that was real!

Indeed. Love the expressed sentiment here - we always look at the "damage" in a person, human nature I suppose, then quickly discount the person. Without really stopping to look at the beginning point and see how far they've come.

But if we ever came to do so, we'd realize the damage being a result of the person's determination to succeed against all odds.

We would then not ask WHY the said person is all damaged. We'd be more like - HOW in the world did you manage to survive against such immeasurable odds?

True beauty realized.

This negro Tupac ... *shaking my head* ... was something serious.

Wow! If only Tupac wasn't such a conflicted soul. I can only imagine the things he could have done.

Traci Lavette said...

Conflicted because he was before his time. He spoke the truth. His life was as it was because that's normally how it is with one working with a genius mentality...it's why I believe he was assassinated. Not murdered. Assassinated. He had so much to say and with intelligence. The educated black man is this country's biggest fear. It's unfortunate, but I'm so happy he didn't "dumb down".

Don said...

@ traci lavette: i agree shakur was way before his time. i hear alot of people use this phrase during tupac discussions. i once looked at his murder from a "well calculated hit" POV, then i compared it to notorius BIG's shocking murder six months later. eerily similar. of course, i hardly feel this to be a coincidence.

i am led to believe it's highly impossible for two well known black men to have been murdered in front of a camera (might as well say) and no one has been arrested for either murder.

in fact, the feds had pictures of people supposedly following BIG moments before the murder. How non-understanding is that? so what, did highly-trained federal agents stop taking pictures as his green suburban drove away? c'mon now.

i will stop, but i can go on for hours when it comes to tupac shakur's death. hell, tupac shakur, period.

@ strongblackwoman: i wonder myself. he died at age 25. not even a man yet.

@ solomon: thanks.

@ mizrepresent: one day i'ma turn you on to some tupac. lol.

tupac was a gemini and the gemini's are the best communicator's in the zodiac

they never shut up lol

but anyway, this quote reminds me of a quote that my idol the late great afrocentric psychologist Dr. Amos Wilson made:

"the reason why black men kill each other so much is because we have not yet decided to kill white men"

before anyone bashes him for being a racist, they should really think about that statement and tie it in with the tupac one

Mizrepresent said...

@Don - i did not google those songs...they just happen to be the ones that were my favorites. ??? at being smooth???
