Don't kill me, forgive me.
To be honest, I figured that since the majority of black folks refuse to vote, or don't realize we have civil rights, but continue to partake in ignorant black on black crime ... apparently, Dr. King lost his life in vain. Matter of fact, if today hadn't officially been declared as a "holiday," how many of us would have bothered to show up at work today? Not many, I am willing to bet. I know I wouldn't.
Nah, let me stop playing. Last week I was reading an interesting post over at the blog Thought For The Day, touching upon the intriguing similarities between presidential candidate Barack Obama and The Artist. It was a good read. Thought-provoking, at its finest. And it also got me to thinking about the musical genius who will forever be known as Prince. I posed the question to the blog author, hardcore, about what is his favorite Prince song ever? I will get to that, shortly.
Do you remember the first time you heard Prince's music? I do. It was somewhere around the year '83, when I saw the video Little Red Corvette. That song was in heavy rotation on MTV back when MTV was a video channel. BET was also a video channel, during this same time. I didn't take to the raunchy Prince initially. I mean, let's face it, the guy wore heels, leotards, had beautiful long hair, and was rather creepy-looking in an era where, in my neighborhood, it was all about your kicks, your gear, and your stone cold B-Boy Stance. His music was good though. His lyrics even better.
Maybe what I should say is that no one really understood Prince. My classmates sure didn't. Certainly not the black students. Everyone was gone off that hip hop music - its' newborn culture. I listened to Prince but I didn't let anyone know. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I hid my Prince cassettes whenever my friends would come over to the crib. What would my "friends" think if they knew I listened to a dude who looked like a woman making screaming noises like a woman does, while singing in a falsetto voice?
After everyone sat around and listened to RUN DMC or Whodini or even New Edition, and they left the house ... I'd instantly close the bedroom door, reach high into the top of my closet, pull out the Purple Rain cassette, and proceed to grab a broom and give yet another scintillating, sweat-filled, electrifying concert performance.
All this while standing directly in front of my bedroom mirror.
Don't laugh. Just as there's a little Tupac Shakur within all of us, there is also a little Prince Rogers Nelson stored inside. Somewhere.
Don't get it twisted though. I never did the freaky looking dance he does. But I did jump off the bed onto the floor while giving a seriously mean guitar solo, similar to the classic riff Prince gave at the end of the video Let's Go Crazy. Remember that?
What's funny is that once I reached junior high school, those same friends had now began to discover the legend Prince truly is. Many of these same people were taken aback by his pure genius. And there I was, the entire time, already aware of his extraordinaire. Isn't that something? I guess that is another reason why peer pressure sucks.
Since my blog is my personal time capsule and stay going against The Blog Grain ... like civil rights leader MLK, the birth of Hip Hop music, and His Royal Badass, who all decided to go against the grain in sake of their respective dream, I too decided to step out the box and ruffle some collars with my mouthpiece and post about a talented and fearless individual who took full advantage of his deeply-rooted freedom.
Every now and then, at least, I figure some collars need to be ruffled. Isn't that exactly what is wrong with us now - too content and settled in our ways? Hopelessly afraid to step up and change the game. Jena 6 was incredible, I have to admit. But what's next?
We aint gon' do ish.
Anyways, in no particular order, these are my favorite 10 Prince songs ever:
1) The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
2) The Beautiful Ones
3) Free
4) Adore
5) I Wanna Be Your Lover
6) Still Waiting
7) insatiable
8) When Doves Cry
9) Purple Rain
10) Pop Life

Ahh...Prince a true legend in his own right. I remember 82' like it was yesterday. When Jerry Curls and activator where in style..lol He has also given us some timeless songs..I wanna be your lover, insatiable, and when doves cry are some of my favorites and not to mention Purple Rain..I am going to have to go and find that movie.

Prince has definitely done his thing throughout the years, even when those who didn't understand him or his music, it was still fyah! Nice list! Thanks for visiting my spot.
Loves it Don...
I love love love Prince and its bananaz how he has been pimpin the industry. Only signing 1 album deals with labels, making his album free to an entire crucial market like the UK and still going platinum... something that artists now-a-days could never do. His music is timeless...
everytime I think of Prince now though... I think of Dave Chappelle and how Prince played basketball in high heels and then cooked everybody pancakes...LOL...

in no particular order
Lets Go Crazy, Love U but dont trust u anymore, 1999, Purple Rain, Adore, Little red Corvette, Erotic City, Sun Moon and Stars, Raspberry Beret, and Mr. Sexy Man (just for the title alone!)
I've been a Prince fan every since I was in junior high school. My aunt and uncle introduced me to his musicial sound and that's when the love affair with Prince and his music began. I recall having my room covered with man posters of the one man I just knew was going to be my baby's daddy. I still have the door size poster of him in that purple jacket from Purple Rain. I recall what was deemed to be his "last concert" tour going by myself. The guy I was dating at the time was supposed to go but changed his mind at the last minute...still made him get me my ticket and I went to that Prince concert by my doggone self. That surprised the heck out of the dude I was dating, but hey, I told him I really wanted to go to that concert--not my fault he changed his mind. Had a blast too...as far as I was concerned, it was just me and Prince out there in that stadium. I can go on and on about how I feel about Prince and his music.
@ natarsha: Definitely gave some classics. I can't hear the song Purple Rain without getting a lump in my throat. Deep song all the way around.
@ kayla: I love the way prince did Prince without allowing peer pressure to get in the way. A true legend.
@ eb: game. blouses. That was some funny ish. Then he turned around and ask if they wanted pancakes. Chapelle is a nut. 1 year deals...Prince got mad game, I see.
@ james tubman: I saw Prince for the only time in 'o4. Women were crying when he performed certain songs. It was crazy. The song Love Bizarre (w/Sheila E.) was a hot song.
@ prettyblack: oh, you are a Prince fan, no doubt...dmsr, lady cab driver, do me baby, sexy dancer, controversy - non-commercialized Prince joints. Do you remember the song Ronnie Talk To Russia? lol
@ poetry: I love the spirit of that song. It took me a minutes to realize that he was talking about his death. He's right, his friend was a whole lot better off than the fools he left here. Deep song.
@ karrie b: I remember when the Kiss video first appeared on MTV. It's when he cut the long hair. And polished his music, a little. I said to myself, "yeah, Prince is about to James Brown the music industry now." lol
@ Queen: when I first heard Sexy MF, I was speechless. But then I realized Prince has always did whatever it was he wanted to do. If I Was Your Girlfriend was a different kind of love song, huh?
@ cannon: Yep, true Prince fan. Not everyone has heard Bob George or She's Always In My Hair. Both funky songs. When Doves Cry was another ill song.
@ all-mi-t: Thanks, and headed over to your blog.
@ jas: no problem. and I enjoyed the visit to your blog. MLK, Hip Hop, & Prince are the truth.
@ hardcore: lmao. I used to get mad when my sister grabbed the broom, first. Those were the days. Lets Go Crazy was on some I wanna be a rockstar type stuff. That's for the inpiration. Your pen is the truth. Is Scandalous Suite where he dated and wrote about actress Kim Basinger?
@ trouble: Erotic City! The BOMB! And..."if God one day struck me blind, your beauty I'd still see. Love is too weak to define, just what you mean to me..." *shaking my head*
@ sheila: I see, you can go on and on about Prince. The time I saw him live in concert I couldn't help but feel a spiritual awakening in the air. People where tuned into the stage like it was The Second Coming, or something. And when the lighters and candles were lit in the air...aw man, Prince's job was done!
Oh, and dude was right - the beautiful ones, they hurt you. Every time. The beautiful ones we always seem to lose...
But we gon' make it, regardless.
And it's going to take more than a bullet to hold that spirit back. Hear me!
Beautiful Ones is my FAVORITE!!!!
Don,
"But I did jump off the bed onto the floor while giving a seriously mean guitar solo, similar to the classic riff Prince gave at the end of the video Let's Go Crazy."
I want to see that!

yes, prince is the man. i did not fully appreciate him until his superbowl performance in 2006. when he took off that do-rag and let the miami rain touch that perm.... to me, that's when he became a ROCKSTAR !
p.s. metro-sexual... see, shemar moore, or depending on who u ask... maybe even prince.

My mind goes to distant places when I'm reminded of the artist KNOWN as Prince, now and forever more. Sigh. I mean, he was my light-skin idol, while Micheal was my brown-skin one, back in the day. I love all the songs you've listed. All. Of. Em. He's always made me want guitar lessons. Hey, I too have a dream. See, I didn't forget what today it is... *Rip MLK*
oh no, no soup for francisco. not to mention, he calls me heether. that's just weird.

Have always loved prince! Purple rain was like my 3rd or 4th album. Although I was banned from listening to Darling Nikki.
I saw him during the musicology tour--I would go see him live in a MINUTE!
Don--that's a good top 10 list. I mean insatiable, adore and the beautiful ones?
I'm also a fan of alphabet street, soft and wet, i would die for u, u got the look, erotic city and sexy mf. I'll stop now, cause I could go on.
Love Prince!
I remember the first time I heard his music was in the car with my cousin who was blasting "Darling Nikki" and my mother was not thrilled.
Needless to say I have been a fan every since. (and secretly played Darling Nikki on cassette when my mother was not around ;-)
Wow! Have kids nowadays even SEEN a cassette tape?
